Frequently Asked Questions

How It Is Collected?

The 3% fee should be quoted to guests as part of the taxes. For example: All rates are subject to 3% Destination Marketing Fee (DMF), 4% Alberta Tourism Levy and 5% GST. For a room that rented for $100 the calculation would be:

$100 x 1.03 = $103.00

$103 x 1.09 = $112.27

Base room rental
$100.00
3% DMF fee
$3.00
Total room rental
$103.00
4% Tourism Levy
$4.12
5% GST
$5.15
Total Cost
$112.27

Q. What if the customer asks about the DMF charge on his final bill?

A. The DMF fee is a Destination Marketing Fee instituted by the Canmore Hotel and Lodging Association to fund Tourism Canmore Kananaskis (TCK) marketing activities, capital investments projects where appropriate and the for the creation of new festivals, events and programs in this region.

Note – In the two years since the voluntary levy was instituted in Calgary and Edmonton, the fee has only been questioned on one occasion and that was for clarification, not for debate purposes.

Q. What if we have contracted bookings already in place?

A. We would suggest choosing a date to begin charging your regular room reservations and begin charging on that date. All contracted bookings with wholesalers could be given a grace period of 6 months to a year.
